How to Buy a Mattress![]() Do you know how to buy a mattress? Although everyone has their individual reason to buy a mattress, most of these can be grouped into two primary reasons. One, an old mattress whose time to replace, upgrade, or re-size often drives the action. The second occurs more frequently with age, when the function of your current sleep surface does not meet your body balance needs. Generally, mattresses have two sections: the sleep surface section designed for comfort and pressure relief and the structural support section that provides spinal alignment. Mattress discomfort comes in many forms. Hip or shoulder pain usually suggests a sleep surface that creates pressure points. For side sleepers, low back pain may indicate a worn structural support that allows the hips to miss-align. There are three factors to consider when choosing a sleep surface: 1. Materials in the comfort/pressure relief section and the structural/support section 2. The physics of mattress materials are mostly compression except for intelli-gel™ in intelliBED which uses a Grid-Arc technology, reducing pressure points and maintaining spinal alignment to provide the best body balance. 3. Your physique also figures into your choice - sleep position, body mass index, and underlying medical conditions. More information can be found in the technology section.
